Car Sharing .Network has been the definitive resource for the industry since the late 1990's. Launched at a time when the concept was not much more than an idea - less than 1,000 people car sharing anywhere in North America, and almost none outside Quebec - we plan a big upgrade to the site in 2011to reflect the rapid growth and evolution of our industry. ie as Car Sharing has become maintream in the large cities and university towns and campuses, new vehicle and communication technologies arrive, and new ideas like peer-to-peer car sharing emerge, the best role for this site is evolving too.

This site does NOT own or operate car sharing services in any city. Please contact specific operator(s) in your city to start driving.

If you want to bring car sharing to your city, you should start by contacting existing suppliers (to see if you're on their list, or could work with them). Starting a car share is a big project, not likely a money-maker for many years if ever (on a one-off scale). That said, many smaller cities and communities will have to start their own if they want one (so do your research, including contacting existing companies in cities of a similar size.).

Although the link no longer works, the title of the first online news article that was ever linked from this site certainly sums-up how far our industry has come: ("Yes!")

Will public buy car-sharing? (Seattle Times, December 26, 1998)

Car sharing will become the backbone for a future of networked, flexible, social transit. There was a time when 'no self-respecting 40 year old man would admit to not owning a car'. Yet today, Gen Y now use cars in urban America about 33% less than their Gen X aunts and uncles, due in part to cell phones, social media and the rest of the Internet. They are also totally open to the idea of sharing a car, or a ride, especially if there's an App for that. Car Sharing is the smart alternative to owning a car (tm), and the revolution has just begun.

The car of the future... will be shared.(tm
